Obituary

Richard J. Garbacik, 88, of Camp Hill, PA would like to let you know that his work here is done. He received a “call” on April 9, 2020, for his next assignment, the kind of call you can’t refuse. This assignment comes with a huge sign-on bonus, a reunion with family, friends and pets he has not seen in a long time.

The son of the Frank and Nellie (Skitzki) Garbacik, Richard was born on July 9th, 1931 in Hazleton, PA.

Richard received his Bachelor’s degree and Masters of Administration from Penn State University. He is a US Navy Veteran who served during the Korean War. Richard was a retired Electrical Engineer from the Naval Ship Engineering Center in Mechanicsburg, and a Registered Professional Engineer. He was a member of the Church of The Good Shepherd in Camp Hill and St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Harrisburg, Camp Hill American Legion Post 43, Lower Allen Township, VFW Post 7530, The Engineering Society of PA, and Carlisle Fish and Game Assoc. We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from “The Candy Man,” among them: Let people know that you are “Perfect in Every Way just like them.” Also, don’t take fashion cues from anyone! And, no matter how bad things get, “It’s just a temporary inconvenience.” Richard was a very generous man, even with wildlife. He fed the deer in his backyard on a nightly basis and he took pride in watching them frolic and the effect it had on those passing by.

He is survived by his close friends whom he considered daughters, Dr. Lee Morand (boyfriend Jerry Tarud) and Paige Pynos, all from Camp Hill, PA. Among his many friends, best friend Dick Jones, Annie and Marie Hine-Bernard, Kieran, Tom, and Jenna Cavrich.

Due to the health concerns of COVID-19, a mass of Christian burial to be held at the Church of the Good Shepherd will be planned for a later date.

Myers-Harner Funeral & Cremation Services, Camp Hill, has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.

Richie was such a sweet soul! I am thankful to have so many wonderful memories.. While visiting my Auntie Lee he would always stop by to say 'hi' or join us for breakfast and our many summer vacations at the beach. Boy, will his visits and sweet hugs be missed. He was always giving to others. He made people feel as though there was always enough love in the world. Whether it was with candy or scholarship money, he was always encouraging others. One of my favorite memories of Richie was on our family vacation. Richie always had a four-legged pal and knew of my love for dogs since I was a little child. My family was concerned about my adjustment to a new place and a doctoral program so they encouraged me to stop looking at adoption posts. Richie leaned over to me and said “ everyone needs something to love, get the dog”. Now, I have two rescue hounds. They have been my family away from family. He was right, I needed something to care for and love. I always thought we would get more time together and more visits. The world will miss you Richie, puppies included. I have no doubt you will continue to be a guardian angel for all of us. Love, Krystal Wood

My dear Godfather - Uncle Richard, the news of your passing was so shocking since we spoke just days before. Thank you for checking on me and always including me and my family in your holiday greetings, include those creative, homemade cards. Through my family relocations to Pennsylvania and Florida, and my battle with breast cancer, you continued support and correspondence with us. Spending my summers as a young child in Camp Hill at Grandma's (or Granny as you would say) house was truly a foundation that inspired me and would be reflected in my future. I am so thankful for traits which can be traced to the Garbacik family - my excellent penmanship (essential for my job and all those flip charts and whiteboards!), our love of dogs, gardening, and in true confession - I collect a lot of (important) things. And one more thing - I get a loaf of challah bread with raisins every week! But most notably, thank you for introducing me to engineering and encouraging me to be an engineer. While I started college as a mechanical engineering student - my degree and career as a civil/transportation engineer turned out to be a better fit for me (that thermodynamics class was a game changer for me!). And like you - I value and have taken an active role in supporting scholarship opportunities for students pursuing the engineering profession. And let us not forget our love for college sports - as we just talked about! All of these memories - and those described by other members of the generations of Garbacik and Lesny families, friends and neighbors on this Memory Wall - are genuinely written for you - as your life was full of inspiration and generosity across this nation - thank you! Rest assured your legacy will live on. With love - always. Rest in peace.

Uncle Rich is survived by his 3 remaining siblings Rosemarie, Eddie and Loretta and their families including spouses and numerous nieces and nephews across the country and abroad. We have countless memories of his unique humor and personality during hundreds of holiday meals cooked by our grandmother Nellie. Uncle Rich taught us how to fish, hunt and explore the shop he designed. He hid Easter eggs in the backyard and showed us the love of rescue dogs! He attended our baptisms, weddings and graduations. He was generous to many. He was loved and will be missed. Rest In Peace Uncle Rich!

Uncle Richard was the kindest and most thoughtful man. He was always so generous to me and my family. His homemade cards and handwritten notes always made my day and are being held very dearly during this time. My mother (his niece) and I were just discussing the other day after a recent call with him how we should Join him in attending a Penn State football game in the fall. He loved that school. His work ethic and love for engineering has inspired many in our family. We will miss you very much Uncle Richard & appreciate all you have done for us. We love you! Until we meet again, Rest In Peace.
