Obituary for Eleanor Z. Solon (Zimmerman)

Eleanor Jean Solon, 86 of Messiah Village, passed away at home Friday, June 7, 2019 with her husband and children at her side.
She was the daughter of the late George and Marie (Keegan) Zimmerman of Cranford, N.J.
Eleanor was the wife of Dr. Bernard M. Solon to whom she was married for 64 years.
She attended St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish.
Love, compassion and understanding best describes her life. She lived it from beginning to end, nurturing her family and helping others as a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Eleanor was born in Jersey City, N.J. but spent her childhood and formative years in Bayonne, N.J. She graduated 3rd in a class of over 400 in High School and then attended the prestigious Paine Hall School for students preparing to work in medical support positions.
She married her college sweetheart Bernard Solon in 1954 joining him in Germany during his U.S. Army Service. Together they made a home in Oppenheim living on the German economy where her oldest son was born.
Returning to the U.S., she raised six children in Westfield, New Jersey and Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. Eleanor was active in her community serving as Chairwoman of the Cranford Village Improvement Association and Social Editor of the Cranford weekly Citizen and Chronicle.
After raising her family, she enrolled in a nursing program at Union College, New Jersey. After moving to Pennsylvania, she enrolled at Harrisburg Area College in nursing graduating in 1982 at age fifty. She spent two years nursing at Osteopathic Hospital, Harrisburg.
Eleanor worked as a Registered Nurse for Cowley Associates for 13 years.
Eleanor was an avid traveler with her husband and Kupie her dearly loved Yorkie. She loved animals, birds and wildlife. She loved tending her bird feeders and taking care of her beloved Kupie.
In retirement, her service continued as a First Responder at Traveler’s Rest Resort near Dade City, Florida during winter vacations and she continued volunteer work at Messiah Village virtually for the rest of her life.
Eleanor is survived by her husband Dr. Bernard M. Solon of Mechanicsburg, PA; her children Richard T. Solon and wife Margie of Wayne, PA, Steven M. Solon and wife Kathryn of East Berlin, PA, Elizabeth S. Frantz and husband Karl of Camp Hill, PA, Dr. Eric G. Solon and wife Denise of Unionville, PA, Mark D. Solon and wife Meri of Virginia Beach, VA, and David W. Solon and wife Connie of Manheim, PA. In addition to her children Eleanor is survived by her grandchildren, Kathryn Solon Cline, Lauren Solon DeCastro, Karen Solon, Michael Solon, John Frantz, Kiersten Frantz, Danielle Solon, Katherina Solon, Dr. Christine Solon Hall, and Casey Solon as well as great grandchildren Jacob and Alice Cline, Aila Solon - de Castro, Hughy and Sage Solon-Canny, and Kairi Solon.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, in the Chapel at Messiah Village, 100 Mt. Allen Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA, with Rev. Monsignor William J. King as Celebrant. A visitation will be held in the Chapel on Wednesday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of the service. A private burial will be held following the service in Tri-County Memorial Gardens, Lewisberry, PA.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Francisvale Home for Smaller Animals, 328 Upper Gulph Rd, Radnor, PA 19087. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Myers-Harner Funeral & Cremation Services Inc.
