Edward J. Nugent was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1933. While at Olney High School he earned Varsity Letters in football, basketball and baseball. In his Senior year he was Captain of the basketball and baseball teams, was named the outstanding Olney’s Male Athlete of the Year and made the Philadelphia All-City Basketball and Football Teams. He attended Shippensburg University were he again earned Varsity Letters in football, basketball, and baseball. Ed was Co-Captain of the football teams and made All-State Honorable mention in 1955. He graduated in 1956 and joined the U.S. Army and served in Germany. He began his coaching career at Camp Hill High School in 1959 and coached for 30 years, ten years in football, one year in baseball and 28 years in basketball. His basketball teams won 418 games and only lost 141. During that span were 4 District Titles and the Eastern Class “B” Crown in 1971. Ed has coached many All-Star teams over the years, received 4 Old Timers Coaching Awards, the Officials Sportsmanship Award and in 1989, he was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

In addition to his coaching career, Ed was a history teacher in the Camp Hill School District for 35 years. Ed was active in his alumni groups, from the St. Helena grade school to The Shippensburg Red Raiders Club. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren and watching their sporting events.
Edward is survived by his son Jeffrey and wife Jane Nugent, of Haddonfield, NJ, and their children Allison, Jake and Ben; a daughter-in-law Donna Nugent, of Frederick, MD, and her children McKenzie and Austin.
In addition to his parents and wife Shirley, Edward is preceded in death by his son John E. Nugent.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 in the Church of the Good Shepherd, 3435 E. Trindle Rd., Camp Hill, with Rev. Philip Burger as Celebrant. A visitation will be held in the church on Tuesday from 9:30 A.M. until the time of the mass. Burial will be held in St. John’s Cemetery, Mechanicsburg, PA.
