Obituary for Margit E. Noro (Honkasalo)

Margit Ellen (Honkasalo) Noro, of Dillsburg, PA, passed from this Earth on October 14, 2015 at Harrisburg Hospital.
Margit was born in Karstula, Finland in 1932. She moved to New York City in 1948, as many did after WW II as life was still very harsh in Europe and it was the beginning of the Cold War with Russia. Margit adapted to life in her new country and became active with the Finnish Women’s Gymnastic Association and performed at Finn Hall in the Bronx, many times. There she made many life-long friends Also, it was there, while acting in a play, that she met her future husband, Rudy. They married and had two children, and after many years of working in the advertising business in NYC, Rudy and Margit decided to get out of the ‘rat race’ and moved to Camp Hill, PA. Margit was a member of the Camp Hill Women’s Association and Camp Hill Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years.
Besides being a home-maker, Margit worked as a travel agent for Suomi-Seura (Finnish Society) where she booked and accompanied chartered flights to Finland. This allowed her to visit her treasured homeland many times. She also taught Scandanavian-style gymnastics at Harrisburg Academy in Camp Hill.
Margit, Rudy and their family spent their summers, as many Finns like to do, at a rustic cabin near a lake. Their mountain home (“Metsama”) was in Pine Grove Furnace State Park near Gardners, PA. When Rudy retired, they built the cabin into a home they could live in year-round, but Rudy’s passing in 1983 changed Margit’s plans. She briefly moved back to Camp Hill, renewed her studies in the travel industry and moved to Virginia to work for “Ask Mr. Foster” Travel Agency. Ultimately she returned to PA and lived her last years in the Carroll Village Retirement Village in Dillsburg where she made many friends and enjoyed the knitting club and Bible Study and was a member of the Monaghan Presbyterian Church in Dillsburg.
Margit will be most missed for her spirit, her Sisu (Finnish courage), her loud and frequent laugh, her stories and silly jokes, and her home-baked Finnish “Pulla” which she made many times throughout the year to gift family and friends. She dearly loved spending time with her four grandchildren and over the years was always on the side-lines cheering on her favorite athletes and scholars or in the audience clapping for her ballerina. Margit was a big fan of live theater and she and her daughter shared many wonderful times taking in the local musicals.
Margit is survived by her two children, Robert (“Bipps”) Noro of Stowe, Vermont and Lisa Margit McMullen of Mechanicsburg, PA; her beloved daughter-in-law, Lesley Noro; four grand-children, Kyle and Jonathan (“Bubba”) Noro and Taryn and Ian McMullen; nieces, Ellen Izzo and Nora Gaughler, and nephew, Leo Maki and many cousins still in Finland.
Margit loved flowers but to honor her memory donations to her church are appreciated. There will be a visitation on Monday October 19th, from 5-7, followed by a memorial service at Myers-Harner Funeral Home, 1903 Market Street, Camp Hill, PA, 17011.
